Description
A gym climber's nightmare, Ad Hoc demands imaginative beta, precise crimping, and delicate footwork. Most will dislike this diminutive 50ft less-than-vertical line but technical aficionados will appreciate its multifaceted obstacles.
Personally this line took three attempts, pulling past two bolts, tick marks, and multiple sequence variations to just reach the chains. When the shade disappeared and we were forced to flee, I left not discouraged by what I was unable to accomplish but in awe of what is possible. With enough persistence it is possible to ascend even the blankest of faces.
Location
There are two sport routes on the left side of Hawk Rock. Scaerobics (5.11+) is on the left and Ad Hoc is on the right. Short-tail, a trad route, is to the right.
Protection
6 or 7 bolts to chain anchors. The last bolt and anchors may be shared with Scaerobics.
The bolts were replaced in 2015 with ASCA hardware.
